Monsun-Theater

The Monsun-Theater is a small independent theatre in Hamburg’s Altona-Altstadt district. It began in 1980 in a former mustard warehouse on Friedensallee in Ottensen and moved to its present home in Billrothstrasse in 2024. The building once served as a storage space for the Kühne company until the 1970s. The theatre belongs to the Hamburg off network of underfunded stages and has won ten Rolf-Mares prizes for acting, directing and music. Ulrike von Kieseritzky led it for eighteen years, and Françoise Hüsges has shaped its international profile since 2015. Recent seasons mix contemporary circus, Tanztheater and plays for young audiences, alongside an annual festival that explores disability and inclusion. Inside, the 100-seat auditorium hosts productions of new writing and devised work. The foyer doubles as a gallery for modern art, while the stage hosts everything from Burkina Faso collaborations to experimental tape performances. The surrounding streets of Altona-Altstadt offer cafés and quiet corners after the show.
