Schloss Boden

Schloss Boden stands in the village of Boden, part of Edelsfeld in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria. It is a two-storey plastered stone building with a steep roof, built in the 16th or 17th century. The structure has a round-arched entrance, rows of windows along each side, simple decoration and a small tower on the roof. Records from 1514 show Erhard Grätl as the first recorded owner of the estate. Over the next centuries the property passed through several noble and patrician families, including the Zedtwitz, Steinlinger and von Steinling. By the early 19th century the von Steinling family held the estate until it became part of a larger municipal district. The building is recognised as a monument and has been listed since the 16th century. It once served as a wayside inn until 1942, when it became a working farm. Archaeologists have found traces of earlier buildings on the site, including remains from the early modern period. The present farmyard occupies the former forecourt of the old manor. Visitors can still see the main block of the house and its simple façade, though it no longer looks grand. A walk around the farm reveals the stone walls and roof of the old manor house. The round-arched doorway and small roof tower are still visible from outside. The surrounding village of Boden lies in gentle countryside, with open fields and wooded hills nearby. The building itself is modest today, but its long history is still legible in its walls. The farmyard is quiet, with no grand interiors to explore, yet the place tells a story of changing owners and uses over four centuries.
