Acton Burnell Castle

Acton Burnell Castle stands in a quiet Shropshire valley near the village of Acton Burnell. It is the ruined shell of a 13th-century fortified manor house built by Robert Burnell, Bishop of Bath and Wells and close adviser to King Edward I. The site once formed part of the old Roman road Watling Street, giving it strategic importance in the 13th century. A licence to crenellate was granted in January 1284, allowing the manor to be fortified with corner towers and high walls. Before the manor was finished, Edward I held a Parliament here in 1283, the first fully attended by the Commons. The laws passed became known as the Statute of Acton Burnell, protecting creditors and recognising the growing influence of traders. The manor was a large rectangular building three storeys high, containing a hall, solar, private chambers, offices, a chapel and a kitchen. Robert Burnell also built the nearby Church of St Mary and helped organise the surrounding village. After his death in 1292 the estate passed through marriage to the Lovels of Titchmarsh, then to the Duke of Norfolk following Henry VII’s confiscation after the Battle of Stoke Field. By the mid-17th century most of the structure had been demolished, leaving only fragments of the outer walls and gable ends. Visitors today follow a footpath through a small wood to reach the exposed stone shell of the former residence. The remains include sections of the fortified walls and the gable ends of the great barn where the Parliament of 1283 was held. The site is maintained by English Heritage and offers a quiet place to walk among the ruins and consider the building’s role in medieval governance. The surrounding countryside remains largely unchanged since the 13th century, adding to the atmosphere of the place.
