Zentralbibliothek Zürich
The Zentralbibliothek Zürich stands in the old town’s Rathaus quarter, inside the Predigerkloster, a former Black Friars’ abbey. It serves as the main library for both the city and the University of Zürich. The building itself is part of a historic monastery complex. The library’s roots go back to the Stiftsbibliothek of the Grossmünster abbey, first mentioned in 1259. After losses during the Swiss Reformation, Konrad Pellikan rebuilt the collection in the 16th century. The library holds around 5.1 million items, including 3.9 million printed volumes and 124,000 manuscripts. It also preserves 243,000 maps and 560,000 microfiches. The merger of the cantonal and city libraries in 1914 created this central institution. Earlier disputes between the city and university over access led to the founding of the cantonal library in 1835. The Predigerkirche and its music department are recognised as national cultural heritage. Visitors enter a space where centuries of books and documents are kept. The former abbey’s cloisters surround quiet reading rooms. The music department preserves scores and recordings in a protected setting. The library’s catalogue reflects its long history, from medieval manuscripts to modern collections. The building itself, with its Gothic and Renaissance details, offers a sense of continuity.
