Magna Roman Fort

Magnis, or Magna, was a Roman fort beside the Stanegate frontier road in what is now Northumberland. It stood near Carvoran village, a few hundred metres south of where Hadrian’s Wall would later be built. The fort guarded the junction of the Stanegate and the Maiden Way, a north–south road running to Kirkby Thore. Archaeologists have found traces of earlier timber camps beneath the stone walls, the earliest dating from the end of the 1st century. A unit of five hundred Hamian archers, the only archer regiment known in Britain, served here from about 120 AD. The fort’s name appears in ancient lists such as the Ravenna Cosmography and the Notitia Dignitatum. A lost inscription once mentioned the numerus Magne<c>e(n)s(ium), suggesting the place was called Magni or Magna. Some scholars think the name may come from the Celtic word maen, meaning stone or rock. Hadrian’s Wall ran just north of the fort after 122 AD, and its Vallum ditch was dug unusually far away. The fort was rebuilt in stone around 136–7 when the Antonine Wall was built in Scotland. Today the site is home to the Roman Army Museum, run by the Vindolanda Trust. The museum shows frontier life through genuine Roman weapons, tools and a rare surviving helmet crest. A 3D film traces the changing landscape of Hadrian’s Wall over time. Visitors see a large timeline and a gallery about Emperor Hadrian, plus displays on daily army routine. Recent excavations uncovered a 3rd-century terracotta head of a woman with braided hair, thought to be a local practice piece. The head will go on display while experts study whether it shows a goddess or a member of the imperial family.
