Krähberg

The Krähberg is a 555-metre hill in the Odenwaldkreis of Hesse. It stands between the Mümling valley to the west and the Itter valley to the east, on the watershed of the Main and Neckar rivers. The mountain was first recorded in 795 as Crawinberk in a boundary description of the Mark Heppenheim. Its slopes belong partly to the villages of Ober-Sensbach and Hetzbach. The entire area forms part of a large continuous forest within the 89-square-kilometre Natura 2000 site of the southern Odenwald. The hill is best known for the Krähbergtunnel, a more-than-three-kilometre single-track railway tunnel beneath its summit. The L3108 road climbs the ridge at the Reußenkreuz to 515 metres, following a winding route once used for the Krähberg race. The road connects Hetzbach with Oberzent-Schöllenbach. The ridge also carries the Siegfried cycle route through the forest. At the top stands an 18th-century hunting lodge built for Count Ludwig II of Erbach-Fürstenau. The lodge served the count’s family as a summer retreat into the last century. Visitors can still see the building on the hilltop, surrounded by tall trees.
