Schloss Pakein

Schloss Pakein stands on the western slope of the Hum hill in the village of Hum, part of the market town of Grafenstein in the Klagenfurt-Land district of Carinthia. The building dates back to the 17th century, though its oldest section, the eastern wing, is older still. Its shape resembles a horseshoe, with two storeys and vaulted ceilings inside. The southern and northern wings were added later, giving the structure its present form. The estate is surrounded by the quiet countryside of southern Carinthia. The castle’s long history is recognised in Austrian art-historical records. The Dehio survey of Carinthia describes it as a notable example of regional manor-house architecture. Its modest size and simple design reflect the tastes of the rural nobility who once lived here. Despite its age, the building remains well preserved and retains much of its original character. Visitors can still see the contrast between the older masonry and the later additions. Inside, the vaulted rooms and narrow corridors give a sense of the building’s age. The two-storey layout allows light to enter through windows on both floors. Outside, the surrounding slope offers views over the surrounding farmland and towards the hills beyond. The quiet setting makes it a peaceful place to walk and reflect. The contrast between the older and newer parts of the building can be seen clearly from the courtyard.
