Dormans Memorial Chapel

The Mémorial des batailles de la Marne stands on a hill above Dormans in the Marne valley. It is a chapel built in a mix of military and religious styles, with a square crenellated tower and a round walkway around its spire. The site includes a crypt, an upper chapel, a cloister and an ossuary, all arranged to reflect themes of mourning and hope. The architect was first Alexandre Marcel, then Georges Alexandre Closson, who created a building that recalls medieval warrior monks. The memorial honours the two Marne battles of September 1914 and July 1918, which saved France. It was conceived by the Duchess of Estissac and supported by Cardinal Luçon, Bishop Tissier and Marshal Foch, who chose the spot. Funds came from a national subscription called the “Journées des quatre monuments.” The chapel was completed in the 1920s, run by the Salésian fathers until the 1980s, and is now cared for by local volunteers. It became a historic monument in 2019 after earlier recognition in 2014 and 2017. Visitors enter through a façade showing Christ the King and Saint Michael, then descend to the dim crypt where names of the fallen are carved on stones. Above, the upper chapel glows with a seven-metre stained-glass window by Charles Lorin, depicting Jeanne d’Arc and Saint Michael presenting a soldier to Christ. The cloister displays the command structure of both battles, and the ossuary holds the remains of 1 360 unidentified soldiers. From the tower’s walkway there is a wide view over the Marne valley and the old battlefields.
