Orford Castle
Orford Castle stands on flat ground near the River Ore in East Suffolk, twelve miles north-east of Ipswich. Its circular keep, built between 1165 and 1173 for Henry II, rises 27 metres above the marshes. The keep’s three square towers and ashlar walls show Byzantine influence, a design historian R. Allen Brown called one of the most remarkable in England. The castle once controlled a sheltered port created by drained marshes, costing £1,413 to build. Local mudstone and limestone from Normandy were used, with timber brought from Scarborough. The chapel above the entrance has an unusual shape, noted by Stephen Brindle. The castle’s political purpose mattered more than its military strength. Henry II built it to reassert royal power after confiscating land from Hugh Bigod, a rebel baron. The Bigods held nearby Framlingham and other castles, but Orford’s keep symbolised royal authority. By the 13th century, the castle was heavily garrisoned with twenty knights during Henry’s revolt against the Bigods. Trade at Orford’s port later surpassed Ipswich, though the harbour silted up over time. The Ufford family modernised the castle in the 14th century, adding glass and panelling, but used it only occasionally. Visitors today climb the broad staircases to the keep’s upper hall, where morning light fills the best chambers. The chapel’s odd shape and the domed roof above the hall remain visible. The outer walls and towers have mostly vanished, leaving the keep standing alone. The surrounding marshes stretch towards the River Ore, and the view over Orford Ness shows why the castle once guided ships. The keep’s proportions follow the same ratio found in 12th-century churches, linking its design to the era’s ideals.
