Burgstall Rossau
Burgstall Rossau stands on a hilltop 740 metres above sea level, 200 metres west-north-west of the hamlet of Rossau. It occupies a spur above the Wilde Graben valley in the municipality of Altenstadt. The site was built in the high or late Middle Ages as a small hilltop fortification. All visible traces of the castle have vanished over the centuries. The Bavarian State Office for Monument Conservation lists the spot as a protected archaeological monument under the code D-1-8231-0039. Archaeologists recognise it as the remains of a once substantial medieval stronghold. No walls or towers survive today, only buried foundations in the earth. The designation confirms the site’s historical importance despite its quiet surroundings. Visitors find an open grassy mound where the castle once stood. A low earthwork marks the former perimeter, and information boards explain the site’s history. The surrounding beech and spruce woods give the hill a peaceful, rural feel. From the summit there are wide views over the valley towards the Alps on clear days. The place invites a short walk from Rossau along quiet farm tracks.
