Easter Road

Easter Road stands in Leith, a district of Edinburgh beside the Firth of Forth. The stadium is the home ground of Hibernian, a Premiership club, and holds 20,421 seated spectators. Known to fans as ‘The Holy Ground’ or ‘The Leith San Siro’, it has staged international matches and Scottish League Cup semi-finals. Hibs first played on the present site in 1893 after moving from Hibernian Park. The ground once held 65,860 for an Edinburgh derby in 1950, a record for any match in the city. The ground has shaped the club’s history and identity. Hibs won three league titles between 1948 and 1952 and hosted the first British match in the European Cup in 1955. Floodlights were installed in 1954 by local firm Miller & Stables, and undersoil heating arrived in 1980. Plans to expand to nearly 100,000 seats were abandoned in the 1950s. By the 1980s the terraces were reduced and the capacity fell to 27,000. Visitors enter a modern all-seater stadium with four covered stands. The West Stand replaced the old main stand in 2001 and the pitch slope was removed in 2000. The East Terrace once towered above the pitch but now offers clear sightlines from bucket seats. The stadium sits close to Bank Park, the former home of Leith Athletic, and remains a focus for local pride.
