Great Sca Fell

Great Sca Fell stands in the northern Lake District, seven kilometres southwest of Caldbeck. It is the highest of the four Uldale Fells, rising above smooth grassy slopes used for sheep pasture. The fell has twin summits, Great and Little Sca Fell, with the main top reaching 651 metres. A small cairn marks the highest point on a broad flat plateau near the summit. Four ridges spread out from the top, linking to nearby fells such as Knott and Brae Fell. The River Ellen begins on its western slopes, flowing west to the Solway Firth. The fell is a Wainwright, meaning it appears in Alfred Wainwright’s well-known guides. Despite its height, it does not meet the criteria for other major hill lists due to its low prominence of just 13 metres. Little Sca Fell, 400 metres north of the main summit, has a larger cairn and a wind shelter built from a low wall. The summit plateau allows the highest point to be located almost anywhere within a 15-metre radius. From the top, views stretch north to the Solway plain and the Scottish Borders. Visitors reach the fell from minor roads near hamlets like Orthwaite and Longlands. The ascent often starts from these points, with walkers climbing other nearby fells before joining the connecting ridges. The view south is limited by the Skiddaw massif, but the Bowfell group can be seen nearly 30 kilometres away through a gap in the hills. The landscape is quiet and open, with grassy slopes and few landmarks except the scattered cairns. The wind shelter on Little Sca Fell offers a place to rest before continuing along the ridges. The fell’s remoteness and gentle slopes make it a peaceful destination for walkers.
