Schloss Haldenwang

Schloss Haldenwang stands on a narrow ridge above the village of Haldenwang in Schwaben. The main building rises three storeys high, with an octagonal tower added later and wings that form a horseshoe shape. A library wing and a chapel wing enclose a bastion, and outside the chapel lies the family crypt. The entire complex is surrounded by a large park and parts of a curtain wall. The castle was first built in the 15th century and came into the hands of the Freyberg-Eisenberg family in 1515. Rudolph von Freyberg-Eisenberg had it rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style in 1860 under plans by Georg von Stengel. After the Second World War the United States Army occupied the site, then turned it into a home for war-wounded refugees. In 1984 the building was renovated and now contains rented flats alongside rooms used for public events. Visitors find the neo-Gothic hall, library and mirrored hall open for events. The chapel, also neo-Gothic, can be hired for weddings and other ceremonies. The park and remnants of the curtain wall offer long views over the surrounding countryside. The castle remains in the possession of the Freiherr von Freyberg-Eisenberg family.
