Klosterneuburg Monastery

Klosterneuburg Abbey stands on a hill above the Danube, just north of Vienna. Founded in 1114 by Saint Leopold III and his wife Agnes, it began as a small monastery beside their castle. The abbey church was consecrated in 1136 and later enlarged in the Baroque style. The complex includes a twelfth-century castle tower and a Gothic chapel with Saint Leopold’s tomb. Baroque rebuilding started in 1634 under Habsburg direction, led by architects such as Jakob Prandtauer and Donato Felice d’Allio. Later Neoclassical plans by Joseph Kornhäusel were only partly carried out. In 1879 the church and monastery were restored with neo-Gothic twin steeples added. The abbey houses important works of art. The Verduner Altar, made in 1181 by Nicholas of Verdun, is a masterpiece of gilded copper plates. The museum displays Gothic and Baroque sculptures alongside paintings by Rueland Frueauf and Passion panels from 1331. A Babenberg genealogical tree traces the family’s history. The abbey also holds the relic of Saint Leopold’s veil, said to have been found in a vision. During the Ottoman sieges of 1529 and 1683, canons defended the monastery while the imperial court fled. The defence in 1683 helped protect Vienna’s flank during the Christian relief. Visitors walk through the abbey church with its Baroque remodelling and twin neo-Gothic spires. The Verduner Altar and other treasures stand in the museum. The Gothic chapel contains Saint Leopold’s tomb. Outside, the hilltop site offers views over the Danube valley towards Vienna. The Baroque monastery wings frame a courtyard where the original twelfth-century foundations remain visible. The abbey’s setting above the river and its long history make it a place where art, faith and legend meet.
