Downton Castle

Downton Castle stands in the West Midlands near Ludlow, a grand 18th-century country house built on land once used for a medieval fortress. The present building mixes Gothic Revival style with castle-like features, including battlements and towers that recall French semi-fortified houses. A central square tower marks the entrance, while the left wing ends in an octagonal tower and the right in another square tower. The house sits in a landscaped park designed with the help of Thomas Hearne’s drawings. Bishop Henry of Blois began a castle here in 1138, part of a burst of building that year. Later owners turned it into a residence rather than a military stronghold. The house owes much to Richard Payne Knight, grandson of the ironmaster Richard Knight, who remodelled it between 1772 and 1778. Knight’s love of the picturesque shaped both the building and its grounds. His niece Charlotte Knight inherited in 1824 and passed the estate to her second son, Andrew Johnes Rouse-Boughton-Knight, who added a porch, tower, chapel and terraced gardens designed by W.A. Nesfield. In 1881 twelve servants lived and worked at the castle. During the Second World War the house sheltered pupils from Lancing College when their school became a naval base. Visitors approach across rolling parkland where terraces step down beside the house. The entrance front shows the castle’s bold silhouette against the sky, with its embattled parapets and varied towers. Inside, Gothic details frame the rooms, and large windows frame views of the surrounding countryside. The chapel and the Nesfield terraces remain as lasting changes made by the family. Though private, the house and its grounds still tell the story of successive owners who shaped Downton from a medieval castle into a Gothic Revival home.
