Carlton Towers

Carlton Towers stands five miles south-east of Selby in North Yorkshire, a Grade I listed country house built in the Gothic Revival style. The present building dates from 1873–1875, when Henry Stapleton, 9th Baron Beaumont, commissioned Edward Welby Pugin to enlarge an earlier manor. The 250-acre park surrounds the house, which remains in the family of the Duke of Norfolk. The house is notable for its architectural history and its owners’ roles in British history. The Stapleton family acquired the manor in the 14th century, and later members included Knights of the Garter and military officers. The 9th Baron died without an heir, and the estate passed through several generations before being restored in the 20th century. Visitors find a grand house with Gothic details and a landscaped park designed in the 18th century. The East Wing, added in 1765, features a clock dated 1777. The interior has been used for film sets, including Evelyn Waugh’s *A Handful of Dust*. The current residents, Lord Gerald Fitzalan-Howard and his wife, maintain the house as a family home.
