Seefeld Castle

Schloss Seefeld stands beside Pilsensee in Upper Bavaria, its origins reaching back to a 13th-century keep on a rocky spur. A brick bridge from 1674 spans the Höllengraben, leading to a fountain courtyard framed by 18th-century farm buildings. The gatehouse, built in 1736, shows a rococo gable carved with the arms of the Counts of Toerring-Jettenbach. Inside, the donjon’s foundations date from the 10th century, though most of the structure was raised in the 13th and renovated in 1500. The castle’s history is tied to the lords of Seefeld and later the Counts of Toerring-Jettenbach, who shaped its appearance from the 14th century onward. In 1479 Seyfried von Toerring built a Gothic chapel between the keep and curtain wall, and in the 1730s Count Ignaz Felix von Törring-Jettenbach commissioned extensive works including a new brewery and fountain. Gabriel Seidl designed the lodge in 1897, and in the 1990s a brew pub opened in one of the castle buildings. Today visitors find a working brewery and a brew pub serving Bavarian dishes. The southern wing houses a cinema, museum and event hall, while the first floor displays a hall decorated with stucco, paintings and marble pilasters. Special exhibitions occupy the north wing, and the grounds include a large park stretching south from the castle walls. The setting by the lake and the mix of medieval and rococo architecture make it a place where history and present-day life meet.
