Großer Riedelstein

The Großer Riedelstein stands at 1,132 m on the Kaitersberg ridge in the Bavarian Forest. Its rocky top holds a stone monument to the poet Maximilian Schmidt, known as ‘Forest Schmidt’. The mountain divides the valleys of the Schwarzach and the Kaitersbach. In summer the summit draws walkers for wide views across the forest and beyond. A ski lift from the Ecker Saddle brings skiers close to the top in winter. Three main routes climb from Thalersdorf, Arnbruck and Arrach. The E6 long-distance trail crosses the summit on its way from Bad Kötzting to the Großen Arber. Near the top lies the Rauchröhren climbing area. To the south the Kleiner Riedelstein rises at 1,042 m.
