Radialsystem V

Radialsystem is a cultural venue beside the Spree in Berlin’s Friedrichshain district. The building began life in 1881 as Pumping Station V, part of the city’s sewerage system. After decades of industrial use it was converted for the arts and reopened in 2006. A modern extension by Gerhard Spangenberg now sits alongside the preserved brick structure. Inside, the original pumping station’s heavy brick walls remain visible. The modern extension provides light, flexible studios and performance areas. Visitors walk between the old machinery and new studios along wide corridors of exposed brick and steel. Large windows frame views of the Spree and passing boats.
