Theater an der Wien

The Theater an der Wien stands on the Left Wienzeile in Vienna’s Mariahilf district. Built in 1801, it was designed by Franz Jäger in Empire style and once bordered the Wien River before the river was covered and the Naschmarkt market now occupies its bed. Emanuel Schikaneder, Mozart’s librettist and collaborator on *The Magic Flute*, conceived the theatre to stage grand spectacles. It opened with a prologue by Schikaneder and an opera by Franz Teyber, drawing praise for its lavish design. Critics called it the most comfortable and satisfactory theatre of its time. The theatre has premiered many celebrated works and hosted notable figures. Count Ferdinand Palffy von Erdöd owned it from 1813 to 1826, staging opera, ballet, and popular pantomime. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it flourished during the golden age of Viennese operetta. After World War II, it temporarily housed the Vienna State Opera while its usual home was rebuilt. Later, it became a leading venue for musical theatre, premiering *Elisabeth* and *Cats*. Today, the theatre focuses on opera and classical music under director Roland Geyer. It presents Baroque, contemporary, and Mozart operas, often with innovative productions. Recent seasons have featured works by Gluck, Handel, and Janáček, alongside modern pieces like *Dead Man Walking*. The Papagenotor, a memorial to Schikaneder, remains a key feature of the building. The theatre’s programme continues to attract audiences with bold, cutting-edge performances.
