St Andrew's Church, Redbourne

St Andrew’s Church stands in the centre of Redbourne, a small village in North Lincolnshire. The church dates from the 14th–15th centuries, with later rebuilding in the 18th century by William and Thomas Lumby of Lincoln. The tower’s top two stages were added in 1785, and the south chapel became a mausoleum for the Dukes of St Albans in the early 19th century. The church was restored in 1888 by architect W. W. Goodhand, who removed the gallery and added a new south porch. It was declared redundant in 1978 and is now cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. The church’s exterior is built in limestone with lead roofs on the nave and aisles, while the mausoleum and vestry have slated roofs. The tower has four stages with embattled parapets and a clock face on the west side. Inside, the nave has plaster ceilings with foliate bosses, and the font was made in 1775 by Richard Hayward. The east window contains painted glass by William Collins, a copy of Francis Danby’s *The Opening of the Sixth Seal*, and there are twelve stained glass windows depicting the Apostles. The churchyard holds a gravestone for Rev Josias Morgan, dated 1737, and war graves from the two world wars. Inside the chancel, a black marble graveslab dated 1410 depicts a knight and angels, and marble tablets commemorate members of the Carter family and the Dukes of St Albans. The mausoleum contains two tiers of tombs for the St Albans family, and the church holds a ring of six bells, five cast in 1774 by Henry Harrison II.
