Burgstall Haidau

The Burgstall Haidau stands beside the upper mill on the Pfatter river in the Haidau district near Mangolding, part of the Mintraching municipality in the Upper Palatinate. Once a medieval water fortress, it was built in the first half of the 13th century by Ortlieb von der Heide, a Regensburg patrician. The site served for centuries as a Pflegegericht with its own judge before being destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War. Today it appears only as soil marks and faint ground traces that outline the vanished walls. The Bavarian heritage register lists it as a medieval Burgstall under the number D-3-7039-0520. The remains are worth the journey because they preserve traces of a once important judicial centre. Ortlieb von der Heide’s fortress marked the power of Regensburg’s merchant elite in the early 1200s. For generations the Haidau court handled local legal matters, giving the place a long administrative history. Its destruction in the 17th century ended that role, leaving behind the archaeological footprint now protected as a monument. Scholars such as Andreas Boos and Diethard Schmid have documented the site in regional studies of early medieval fortifications. Visitors find a quiet riverside meadow where low earthworks still hint at the former moat and walls. The Pfatter flows nearby, recalling the water that once surrounded the fortress. There are no standing buildings, only subtle undulations in the ground that specialists can interpret. The spot lies close to the upper mill, adding a reminder of the site’s later industrial use. A walk around the field reveals little at first glance, yet the knowledge of its past gives the place a quiet significance.
