Vallis Vale

Vallis Vale is a 23.9-hectare biological and geological Site of Special Scientific Interest near Great Elm in Somerset. It was notified in 1952 and lies within a quiet valley. The site contains ancient woodland dominated by ash and wych elm, a rare stand type in Britain. Its rocks reveal some of the clearest examples of angular unconformity in the country. Geologists have long recognised it as a key research and teaching location. The vale’s geological features have played a significant part in the history of earth science. The vale’s importance lies in its combination of rare woodland and outstanding rock exposures. The ash-wych elm woodland is restricted in its British distribution, making the site ecologically valuable. The rock outcrops show angular unconformity so clearly that they are often cited in geological studies. Researchers and students visit regularly to study these formations at first hand. The site’s geological significance has been acknowledged for many decades. It remains a nationally important locality for both biology and geology. Visitors find a peaceful valley with dense woodland paths winding between the trees. The ash and wych elm stand tall above the forest floor, casting dappled shade. Rock ledges and small cliffs emerge among the trees, displaying layered strata and sharp angular contacts. The ground is uneven in places, with moss and ferns growing on the damp surfaces.
