Burg Lindenberg
Burg Lindenberg is a water castle beside the Ellebach stream in Stetternich, a district of Jülich. Its name recalls the lords who held it in the 14th century until the male line died out. Later the von Harff family took possession, followed by the von Hompesch and von Palant families, the last of whom had alterations made in the 18th century. The castle’s medieval core once had a brick keep on an island of water, though only fragments remain. Two towers, stretches of wall and earth ramparts still stand on the mound. The outer ward, originally four wings around a courtyard, was turned into a farmhouse with tenant quarters in 1743 and remains in private hands. A 4-metre-high Blaustein wayside cross marks the entrance to the estate. The whole site is surrounded by water-filled ditches fed by the Ellebach. Visitors walk past the restored farm buildings and along the grassy banks, where the remains of the old curtain walls rise above the moat.
