Wales Coast Path

The Wales Coast Path is a long-distance trail that runs close to the entire coastline of Wales. It stretches for 1,400 kilometres from Chepstow in the south to the Flintshire border with Chester in the north. The path passes through eleven national nature reserves and other protected areas managed by organisations like the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. It links existing coastal routes such as the Pembrokeshire Coast Path and the Anglesey Coastal Path. The idea for the path grew from the success of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, which was named the second-best coastal destination in the world by National Geographic. The path was officially launched in 2012 after nearly six years of development. It was created by the Welsh Government in partnership with local authorities and national parks. The project cost £14.6 million but quickly proved its economic value, generating tourism revenue that paid off its startup costs within a year. The Welsh Government had invested in improving public access to the coast since 2007 through its Access Improvement Programme. Improvements continue, such as the rebuilding of Pont Briwet bridge in Gwynedd, which removed a long inland detour. Walkers follow the path through seaside towns like Conwy and Tenby, past landmarks such as Harlech Castle and the Llŷn Peninsula. Some sections suit cyclists, families with pushchairs, and people with restricted mobility. The path is divided into eight geographical sections, each with its own guidebook. In its first year, nearly three million people walked parts of the route, contributing millions to the local economy. The Countryside Council for Wales continues to improve the route’s quality and alignment where possible.
