Viendorf Kapelle Johannes Nepomuk
The Johannes-Nepomuk-Kapelle stands in the park of Schönborn Castle in Göllersdorf, a village in Lower Austria. Built between 1729 and 1733 by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt, it is a small Baroque chapel under official protection. The chapel sits on the main axis of the castle grounds, facing the village. Its design includes a square floor plan and a delicate, open dome supported by four columns. The dome is adorned with garlands of flowers and cherubs’ heads. The chapel is dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk, whose statue stands at its centre on a tomb-like pedestal. The pedestal bears carved reliefs showing scenes from the saint’s life, with lanterns on scrolling brackets at each side. The entire structure is crowned by a sculpted crown, adding to its refined appearance. Hildebrandt’s work reflects the elegance of early 18th-century Austrian Baroque. Inside the chapel, visitors find a quiet space centred on the statue of the saint. The delicate stonework and soft light filtering through the open dome create a reflective atmosphere. The surrounding park, part of the larger Schönborn estate, offers a peaceful walk to reach the chapel. The chapel’s position on the main axis guides the eye from the castle toward the village beyond.
