St Mary's Church

St Mary’s Church stands in the quiet fields of Rhodogeidio on Anglesey, a small medieval building from the 15th century. It once served as a chapel of ease for St Ceidio’s Church half a mile away. Restoration work in the 19th century kept it standing for a time, but today it is a roofless ruin. The churchyard still surrounds the remains, and the nearest road is reached by a footpath from a farm. Its isolation is part of its character, with no modern changes to the original structure. The church holds Grade II listed status, protecting it as a building of special interest. Cadw notes that despite its poor condition it remains virtually unaltered, even keeping its original roof trusses. Harry Longueville Jones described it in 1859 as a small, plain chapel with a good example of a medieval window. A 2006 guide calls it the most isolated church on Anglesey, standing alone in the countryside. Inside the ruins the walls still hold slate memorials from the 19th century and a plain circular font from the 12th century. The blocked windows in the south wall show where light once entered, and the blocked east window dates from the late 1400s. Outside, the inscribed stone near the north door bears the date 1798 and initials, marking a later repair. The bellcote at the west end may be original, adding to the church’s medieval feel.
