Museum im Schlossturm

The Museum im Schlossturm stands in the top floor of Diepholz Castle’s tower, a 17th-century structure in the centre of Diepholz. The Heimatverein Diepholz e. V. converted the upper storey into a small regional museum, reached by 133 steps. From the viewing platform visitors look out over the town and surrounding countryside. The building itself is part of Diepholz’s historic castle complex, once home to local noble families. Its private trustees keep the collection open to the public on the first Saturday of every month from April to October. The tower’s height and position make it a landmark visible from much of the town. Inside, seven floors display Diepholz’s past through pictures, tools and craftsmen’s banners from the 19th century. Artefacts show the region’s peat-cutting and moorland work, while a special section covers the Diepholzer goose breed and its feathers turned into quill pens. Coins and medals illustrate the town’s long involvement in minting. Another room recalls the Royal Preparatory Institute that once trained teachers here. A 17th-century treasure chest and other period pieces form a small but striking display of Diepholz’s heritage. Visitors climb the narrow staircase to find changing exhibits on each level. The top floor offers the widest view, taking in the flat landscape and the castle grounds. Downstairs, glass cases hold peat spades, goose skins and old ledgers. The museum’s compact size lets people see everything in a single visit. Labels explain each object in simple language, making the past feel close at hand.
