Aberyscir Castle

Aberyscir Castle stands on a grassy mound beside the River Usk in Powys. It is a motte and bailey castle built between the late 11th century and the mid-12th century from soil and stone. The mound is surrounded by a ditch and has no protective bailey, which is unusual for such castles. It is one of the few remaining examples of this type in Powys. The site is recognised by Cadw, the Welsh historic environment service, as a Scheduled Monument with the reference SAM: BR021. The castle belongs to a group of similar mounds found across several counties. The largest number of these mounds is in Shropshire, Cheshire, Herefordshire, Powys and Flintshire. This makes Aberyscir Castle part of a wider pattern of early medieval defences in the Welsh Marches. The motte’s simple design reflects the rapid construction of castles after the Norman Conquest. Its survival shows how these earthworks were used before stone keeps became common. Visitors find a low, circular mound rising gently above the surrounding fields. The ditch around the base is still visible, marking the limits of the original defences. The River Usk flows nearby, adding to the peaceful setting. The castle site is quiet, with no modern buildings nearby. It offers a clear view of the countryside, showing why this spot was chosen for defence. The lack of a bailey makes the motte stand out as a rare example of its kind.
