River Coln

The River Coln rises north of Brockhampton in Gloucestershire and winds south-east through the Cotswold Hills. It passes small villages such as Andoversford, Withington and Bibury, then flows past Coln St Aldwyns and Quenington before reaching Lechlade. Near Lechlade the Coln joins the River Thames close to the former Thames and Severn Canal. Midway between Withington and Fossebridge the river runs beside Chedworth Roman Villa. Extensive gravel pits between Fairford and Lechlade have been flooded to form part of the Cotswold Water Park, all fed and drained by the Coln. The river supports populations of brown trout and grayling, and its water quality has been measured by the Environment Agency. In 2019 the overall ecological status of the Coln was rated good. Biological status looks at invertebrates, water plants and fish, while chemical status checks safe levels of pollutants. These assessments help protect the river’s wildlife and keep the water clean. A walk along the Coln passes quiet villages and open meadows typical of the Cotswolds. Near Chedworth Roman Villa the riverbank offers views of ancient stone walls and mosaic floors. The flooded gravel pits beside Fairford and Lechlade create wide, still waters where waterfowl gather. Anglers often stand along the banks hoping to catch trout or grayling. The gentle flow and surrounding hills make the valley a peaceful place for short or long walks.
