Church of St Mary and St Melor, Amesbury

The Church of St Mary and St Melor stands beside the River Avon on the western edge of Amesbury, Wiltshire. Built in the 12th century, it may have links to the earlier 10th-century Amesbury Priory or its 12th-century successor, Amesbury Abbey. The church is constructed from flint rubble and limestone ashlar, with a nave, central tower, transepts and chancel. The nave dates from the second quarter of the 12th century, while the crossing, transepts and chancel were rebuilt in the mid-13th century. Around 300 metres to the north lie the remains of the priory and abbey. The church’s history is tied to Amesbury’s monastic past, though the exact connection remains uncertain. Archaeologists found medieval foundations and a tiled floor north of the abbey’s land in 1859–60. Some scholars argue the church served both the nuns and townsfolk, while others believe it was always the parish church. The building was heavily restored in the 19th century by William Butterfield, who reshaped the west end and removed later fittings. The chancel roof, rebuilt by Butterfield, still conceals a 15th-century roof beneath. Inside, visitors find medieval features such as a 12th-century Purbeck marble font and a 15th-century oak chancel screen. The nave holds a brass memorial to Sir Edmund Antrobus, and the south transept contains a 15th-century clock mechanism. The churchyard includes a war memorial designed by C.E. Ponting and several chest tombs from the 18th and 19th centuries. Saxon fragments, including parts of a wheel-cross, were discovered beneath the chancel floor in 1907.
