Farchtensee
The Farchtensee is a small mountain lake in the Gailtaler Alps of southern Austria, close to the larger Weissensee. It sits within a protected landscape area of 190 hectares, where building is largely forbidden. The lake’s catchment area covers about 8.64 square kilometres of alpine meadows and forests. The lake is home to a wide variety of fish, including pike, chub, carp, roach, rudd, tench and perch. It also holds Kärnten’s largest population of noble crayfish, a rare and protected species. The clear waters and undisturbed banks make it an important habitat for wildlife. Visitors find a quiet, unspoilt lake surrounded by steep wooded slopes. A footpath runs around the shore, offering views of the water and the distant peaks. The area is popular with anglers, birdwatchers and walkers seeking a peaceful alpine setting.
