Schloss Zinnitz

Schloss Zinnitz stands in the village of Zinnitz, a district of Calau south of the Spreewald. The present building dates from 1860–1864 and is a fine example of Classical architecture. It belongs to the protected monuments of Calau and now houses an architectural office alongside private flats. The estate has witnessed nearly a thousand years of regional history, first appearing in written records in the early 11th century. Archaeologists have traced slawic ramparts two kilometres away that match the chronicles of Bishop Thietmar of Merseburg. By the 13th century the von Cynnitz family held the estate, and in 1301 it passed to the Archbishop of Magdeburg. The castle’s most distinguished owner was Erasmus Robert Freiherr von Patow, Prussian Finance Minister and later Oberpräsident of Brandenburg. Between 1842 and 1864 he transformed the modest manor into a spacious late-Classical schloss with sweeping parkland and water features. The landscape gardener Johann Gottlieb Handschick incorporated the remains of an earlier vault as a ‘rose hill’ crowned by a pavilion. Patow’s heirs sold the property in 1917 to the Ilse Bergbau AG, and subsequent owners included the Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft and a retired major who ran the nearby mill. Visitors today find a two-storey main block with symmetrical wings and a pedimented entrance. The interiors have been adapted for modern use, yet the late-19th-century façades and park layout remain recognisable. The ‘rose hill’ has vanished, but the park still contains mature trees and water surfaces created by Patow’s alterations. The surrounding countryside shows the scars of former brown-coal workings, yet the schloss stands as a quiet reminder of the region’s layered past.
