Schloss Wain

Schloss Wain stands in the village of Wain, on the north-eastern wooded edge of the Biberach district in Oberschwaben. Built in 1780–81 for Benedict von Herman, the two-storey plaster building has a central projection and a double-flight staircase inside. Free-standing wings once housed gardeners and hunters, while stables and a walled park sit beside the main block. A short walk away lie the vanished remains of Burg Wain, the medieval predecessor. The building is a fine example of early classical style, planned by Munich court architect Lorenzo Quaglio and executed by Eitelfriedrich Knoll. After Benedict’s death the estate passed to his brother Johann Theobald, who preferred the Hermansbau in Memmingen as his home. Later owners altered the interiors in the 18th and 19th centuries, leaving traces of their tastes in the rooms. Today the castle serves as the headquarters of the Freiherr von Herman forest and revenue office. Visitors follow the main staircase up to the upper floor, where the former reception rooms show simple classical detailing. The wings still contain modest dwellings, while the surrounding park offers quiet walks beneath tall trees. From the gate one can look across to the site of the old castle mound, a reminder of Wain’s long history.
