Mülheimer Stadtbrunnen

The Mülheimer Stadtbrunnen stands in the Cologne district of Mülheim. It is a protected sandstone fountain about ten metres high. The main figure is Mülheimia, the city’s crowned patroness, who holds the former city’s coat of arms at her feet. The fountain was unveiled in 1884 to mark the hundredth anniversary of the great flood of 1784. It was built on the corner of Mülheimer Freiheit and Krahnenstraße at the instigation of the last mayor, Bernhard Clostermann. The design came from the Cologne sculptor Wilhelm Albermann, and the Mülheim Beautification Association raised about 9,500 marks for the work. Visitors find the crowned Mülheimia above three smaller figures. These show young men dressed in medieval clothes, representing the city’s three main industries in the 19th century: farming, trade and manufacturing. The fountain remains a local landmark in the heart of Mülheim.
