The Beacon Arts Centre

The Beacon Arts Centre stands on Greenock’s waterfront at Custom House Quay, beside the East India Harbour. It occupies reclaimed land once used by ship repairers and harbourmasters. The site was cleared in the 1990s to make way for new development. LDN Architects designed the building to anchor the town’s cultural life. Its form and materials reflect the nearby river and docks. The centre was shortlisted for a Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland award in 2013. The name ‘Beacon’ was chosen to signal a new cultural landmark for the area. The centre is run by Greenock Arts Guild, a charity founded in 1946. Core funding comes from Creative Scotland and Inverclyde Council. The move from the old Arts Guild Theatre allowed a purpose-built facility. The Main Auditorium and Studio theatre provide spaces for performances and rehearsals. A Gallery Suite hosts exhibitions and meetings on the first floor. Full-height windows frame views over the River Clyde and Firth of Clyde. The cafe and bar share these vistas with visitors. Inside, the Main Auditorium seats 454 people across two levels. The Studio theatre offers a smaller, flexible space for productions. Four dressing rooms and rehearsal spaces support artists and groups. The Gallery Suite doubles as a meeting room and exhibition area. Outside, the waterfront setting links the building to Greenock’s maritime past. The centre continues the guild’s tradition of local arts participation. It remains a focal point for theatre, music, art and community events.
