Uxbridge Moor

Uxbridge Moor is a nature reserve in Uxbridge, within the London Borough of Hillingdon. The site sits on an island in the River Colne, surrounded by water on all sides. It consists of two meadows and areas of willow woodland, creating a varied landscape. Common grasses like oat grass and couch grass grow alongside nettles, while rarer plants such as hammer sedge can also be found. The northern end features damp grassland, adding to the diversity of habitats. The reserve is recognised as a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation, highlighting its ecological value. Birdlife includes kingfishers, which are often seen near the water’s edge. Butterflies such as the speckled wood flutter through the meadows and wooded areas. The presence of damp grassland supports a range of plant and insect species, making it an important site for wildlife. Visitors reach the reserve via a bridge off St John’s Road, located at the northern end of Riverside Way Industrial Estate. The path leads directly onto the island, offering easy access to the meadows and woodland. The willow trees provide shade along parts of the route, while open grassland areas allow for unobstructed views. The River Colne flows around the island, adding a scenic backdrop to the walk. The reserve’s quiet atmosphere makes it ideal for observing nature without disturbance.
