Church of St John the Evangelist, Shobdon

The Church of St John the Evangelist stands in the quiet village of Shobdon in Herefordshire. Built in the 12th century as part of an Augustinian priory, it was later rebuilt between 1749 and 1752 in a striking Rococo style. John Bateman, 2nd Viscount Bateman, oversaw the work, guided by his uncle Richard Bateman, a friend of Horace Walpole. The interior is praised by Simon Jenkins as a masterpiece of English Rococo, while Nikolaus Pevsner and Alan Brooks call it the finest 18th-century church in Herefordshire. The church remains an active parish church today, cared for by the Parochial Church Council and the Shobdon Church Preservation Trust. The rebuilding reused elements from the original church, including arches now standing as eye-catchers in the grounds of Shobdon Court. These arches, known as the Shobdon Arches, form a scheduled monument and are Grade II listed. The exterior of the church is built of coursed rubble with a slate roof, while the interior surprises visitors with its whitewashed surfaces and intricate Gothic, Rococo, and even Chinoiserie details. The short tower houses a belfry, and ogee arches frame the windows and doors. A visit reveals a Grade I listed building that blends medieval remnants with 18th-century artistry. The Shobdon Arches, weathered yet striking, stand in the park as a reminder of the church’s past. Inside, the light-filled interior contrasts with the modest exterior, offering a glimpse of the Batemans’ refined taste. The church remains a place of worship and a monument to architectural ambition, quietly preserving centuries of history in the English countryside.
