St Mary's Church
St Mary’s Church stands in the quiet Gloucestershire village of Little Washbourne, part of the parish of Dumbleton. Built of local limestone under Cotswold slate roofs, it is a simple but elegant structure with a five-bay nave and a two-bay chancel. A small bellcote tops the west end of the chancel roof, while pointed arches mark the windows and doorways. Buttresses support the walls, giving the church a sturdy, well-proportioned look. The north wall of the chancel still holds a narrow 12th-century slit window. The church has been cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust since its Grade II* listing. The church’s history stretches back to the 12th century, though much of its present form comes from 18th-century alterations. These changes rebuilt parts of the north and south walls while preserving the older fabric. Inside, 18th-century fittings remain intact: box pews with panels, an octagonal pulpit with a sounding board, communion rails and table. The stone font and a white and grey marble monument to William Hill, who died in 1786, also date from this period. Faint traces of medieval wall paintings survive beneath the limewash. Visitors step into a cool, flagged interior where light falls softly through pointed windows. The limewashed walls give the space a calm, uncluttered feel. The octagonal pulpit stands near the nave’s centre, its sounding board rising above the box pews. The communion table and rails form a quiet focus at the chancel’s entrance. A single monument on the north chancel wall records William Hill’s memory in polished marble. Outside, the churchyard is small and peaceful, with the limestone walls and slate roofs blending into the gentle Cotswold landscape.
