Militär-Verpflegungsetablissement
The Militärverpflegungsetablissement once stood in Vienna’s second district, a red-brick structure built on part of the old Leopoldstädter Kaserne site. The Ministry of War ordered its construction, and Hauptmann Ferdinand Artmann of the Engineer Corps drew the plans. In 1895 a supply-equipment depot was added, designed by Fellner and Helmer, two architects better known for theatres. During the First Republic the building served as the central supply depot for the federal army. After 1945 it housed civilian firms such as the Hammerbrotwerke and the Vienna City Works. By 1988 only the former administration wing remained, now a protected monument restored and turned into offices. Today the restored building forms the heart of the Upper Danube Street protection zone, which also includes parts of the Rembrandtstraße quarter and the Wettsteinpark along the Danube Canal. Plans have shifted from hotel conversion to creating modern flats, reflecting the site’s changing role in the city.
