Church in Hintersee
St. Johannis is a small red-brick church in Hintersee, a village in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It stands on an unfenced plot south-east of the crossroads where the Landstraße 28 turns into the village street. The building was completed in 1899 and belongs to the Pommersche Evangelische Kirchenkreis. The church’s design mixes late-19th-century Gothic Revival details with simple brickwork. The choir is set back and ends in five sides of an octagon, each field marked by a double-stepped buttress and topped by a circular oculus. The nave is rectangular, divided into four bays by buttresses; the western window has three linked openings while the others follow the choir’s pattern. A small sacristy sits on the north side, and a secondary porch on the south. The square tower, set inside the west wall, has a low segmental doorway framed by a pointed arch and another oculus. Its north and south faces are plain, but the west side carries three tall blank arcades that rise to a cornice and a row of sound openings beneath the pointed spire. Inside, the furnishings date from the same period. Barnim Grüneberg built the organ early in the 19th century. Two bells hang in the tower, one cast in 1899 and another possibly older, salvaged from an earlier church. Outside, a war memorial south-west of the building lists the village’s First World War dead.
