Church of St Mark, Reading

The Church of St Mark stands in Cranbury Road, Reading, Berkshire. It is an Anglican church built in red brick with stone and tile details. The roof is slate and the walls carry flying buttresses. Inside, the western windows show stained glass by Joseph Nuttgens and Reginald Hallward. The eastern window is a larger work by Charles Eamer Kempe from 1905–6. The building was designed by Montague Wheeler, a Scottish architect practising in Reading. It began as a mission fifteen years before the present church was completed in 1905. The organ was installed in 1912 by William Hill & Sons and sits in a painted and panelled loft at the west end. The north-west corner features an octagonal stair tower. Visitors find a calm interior with Arts and Crafts styling and Gothic touches. The Kempe window on the eastern wall fills the chancel with colour. The Nuttgens and Hallward windows on the west wall add further light and pattern. The organ loft above the west door is a notable feature of the space.
