River Muick

The River Muick winds through the Grampian Mountains in Aberdeenshire. It rises near Lochnagar and flows for six kilometres to Loch Muick on the Balmoral Estate. The river’s catchment covers 110 square kilometres of wide valley floor. Glacial deposits have been smoothed by the water into a flat plain. The Muick is a tributary of the River Dee, joining it at the loch’s outflow. Salmon swim in the river’s clear waters. In the mid-19th century botanists found Melampyrum sylvaticum and Hieracium boreale along its banks. The valley floor is filled with glacial debris that the river has partly levelled. The tight meanders show how the water shapes the land. The river’s course remains natural, with no major engineering works. Visitors walk beside the Muick through open moorland and woodland. The river’s banks are lined with grasses and wildflowers. The wide valley offers views of Lochnagar’s slopes. The water is shallow and fast, reflecting the surrounding hills. The Balmoral Estate keeps the landscape undeveloped, so the river stays quiet and remote.
