NS-Dokumentationszentrum

The NS-Dokumentationszentrum stands in Munich’s Maxvorstadt district, occupying the site of the former Brown House, the Nazi Party’s headquarters. The museum examines the history and consequences of the National Socialist regime and Munich’s role as Hauptstadt der Bewegung. Nearby is Königsplatz, where the party held mass rallies, and the building’s design reflects its purpose as a place of learning and remembrance. The centre opened in May 2015 after the Bavarian government chose the Brown House site in 2005. Architectural historian Winfried Nerdinger led its establishment and served as the first director until 2018. He was succeeded by historian Mirjam Zadoff, who now oversees the centre’s work. The museum’s location and exhibits aim to confront the city’s past while encouraging reflection on its legacy. Visitors find a permanent exhibition tracing the rise of National Socialism and its impact on Munich. The building itself, designed for its educational role, includes spaces for research and events. Outside, the surroundings include Königsplatz, a key site from the Nazi era, linking the present with the city’s difficult history.
