Schloss Sandelzhausen

Schloss Sandelzhausen stands in the village of Sandelzhausen, part of Mainburg in Lower Bavaria. It began as a medieval castle first recorded in 1393, with a later Baroque palace added after 1650. The site passed through several noble families until the Freiherren von Hornstein lost their rights in 1848. In 1892 the Wimmer family bought both the 1623 brewery and the palace, turning it into a brew-house inn. The brewery closed in 1985, but the building remains a listed monument under two heritage registers. The palace today shows a half-hipped roof from the 17th or 18th century over an older core. Inside, historic fittings survive alongside the inn’s public rooms. The three-winged farmyard and fragments of the old moat and curtain wall date from the 17th century. Archaeologists also recognise traces of the medieval predecessor beneath the later structures. The ensemble gives a clear picture of a Hofmark seat evolving from fortress to residence to brewery. Visitors find a working inn with rooms in the former palace wings. The central courtyard opens to the old Wirtschaftshof, where stables and storehouses once stood. Remains of the moat and outer wall mark the limits of the medieval defences. Inside, beams and panelling recall the 17th-century rebuild, while the inn serves local dishes and Wimmer beer. The quiet village setting and broad views across the Isar valley complete the scene.
