Spartans F.C.

The Spartans Football Club is a Scottish football club based in the Pilton area of Edinburgh. They play at Ainslie Park in the north of the city and wear white shirts, red shorts and white socks. The club was formed in 1951 by two former Edinburgh University players, Elliot Wardlaw and Jimmy Beaumont. Originally intended for university graduates, the club now welcomes players from all backgrounds. Spartans have a senior team, an Under-20 squad, Saturday and Sunday amateur sides, and several women’s teams including The Spartans W.F.C. The club’s chairman, Craig Graham, was appointed MBE in 2017 for service to the community of North Edinburgh. Spartans have a strong history in the East of Scotland Football League, winning nine championships and lifting the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup ten times. In 2013 they joined the Lowland Football League and won the inaugural title, later claiming two more championships in 2017–18 and 2022–23. Their most recent success came in 2023 when they defeated Albion Rovers in the play-offs to win promotion to Scottish League Two. Forward Cammy Russell scored twice as Spartans completed a historic season by also winning the SFA South Challenge Cup. Ainslie Park is the club’s home ground, a purpose-built facility opened in 2008. It includes a 504-seater stand, floodlit main pitch and an artificial pitch used daily by youth and adult teams. The stadium is also used by the general public. Spartans’ first SPFL match at Ainslie Park was a League Cup win over Dundee United, with Blair Henderson scoring the only goal. The ground has since hosted victories over Premiership sides Ross County and Livingston in cup competitions. The pitch sits close to Ferry Road, a short distance from Crewe Toll in north Edinburgh.
