Kriegerdenkmal

The Kriegerdenkmal in Kronach stands at the northern end of Festungsstraße, below the Rosenberg fortress on a slope. It was designed by local artist Gottfried Neukam and completed in 1936 as a memorial to those lost in the First World War. The structure takes the form of a half-open oval built into the rising ground, with a central sarcophagus supported by four stone lions on a low platform. Metal plaques on the rear wall list the names and dates of death for First World War casualties, while two helmeted stone busts flank the wall, each with a metal plaque beneath commemorating over 500 Second World War dead and missing. Originally the site held two trees, a stairway to the fortress gate and a wayside shrine that was moved about fifty metres west during construction. The memorial has been protected as a historic monument since its creation and underwent full restoration in 2020 after becoming dilapidated. The two original trees were later removed and replaced with new planting, though laurel shrubs added in 2020 were themselves taken out. Every year since 1633 the town’s Schwedenprozession passes through four stations, one of which is this memorial. Visitors find a quiet space shaped by the curving walls and retaining masonry set into the slope. The central sarcophagus and flanking lions form the focal point, while the rear wall carries the inscribed metal tablets. Two stone soldier busts stand guard on either side, each accompanied by a plaque added after 1945. The surrounding area includes the fortress above and the tree-lined approach below, linking the memorial to the town’s historic defences.
