St John the Baptist's Church, Papworth St Agnes

St John the Baptist’s Church stands in the quiet village of Papworth St Agnes in Cambridgeshire. The building is a redundant Anglican church, now cared for by the Friends of Friendless Churches. It was first recorded in the Domesday Survey of 1086, and parts of earlier churches survive within its walls. The present structure dates mainly from the middle of the 19th century, when it was rebuilt under the direction of Rev J. H. Sperling. The church’s exterior combines limestone and flint in a striking chequerboard pattern. A west tower, nave, chancel and north porch form the main plan, with buttresses dividing the bays. The church is notable for its reused medieval and early modern features. A 14th-century doorway and a tower arch from the 1530 church remain in place. The tower itself rises in three stages with embattled parapets and corner gargoyles. All windows are arched with three lights and tracery. Stained glass by William Wailes once filled the windows, though much was removed when the building fell into disrepair. An organ by George Holdich from about 1860 was also taken away during the 20th century. Today the church functions as a community centre after careful restoration. Modern lighting, a kitchen and toilets were added during repairs. The font and a surviving stained glass panel have been returned to the interior. Occasional services are held, and the building hosts local activities. The Friends of Papworth St Agnes continue to care for the site, ensuring it remains a place where history and community meet.
