Schloss Künersberg

A modest Baroque manor stands in the flat farmland of Swabia, just north-east of Memmingen. Built in 1741 for Jakob von Küners, the two-storey house wears a steep mansard roof and stretches eleven windows long. At each corner a small pavilion of two-by-two windows juts out under its own hipped roof. A round-arched doorway in the centre carries an iron grille above the lintel.

For a quarter-century the building housed a faience factory, turning out tin-glazed earthenware between 1745 and 1770. The symmetrical façade still shows the original rhythm of openings, while the slate roofs and dormers catch the light of the Allgäu uplands. Inside, the main rooms follow a simple enfilade plan, their ceilings lined with plain stucco.

Visitors walk past the quiet farm tracks of Künersberg to reach the manor. The wings on north-east and south-east corners frame a small forecourt, and the round-headed door gives a quiet welcome. From the rear the building reveals its modest scale against the wide horizon of Memmingerberg’s fields.
