Burgstall Altenkemnath

The Burgstall Altenkemnath stands in the rolling countryside of Lower Austria, near the border with Bavaria. It is a grassy rectangular mound measuring about fifty by eighty metres, raised by human hands centuries ago. The site lies close to the old road that once led to Eger, where merchants and travellers once passed. Kemnath, a small town a few hundred metres away, began as a roadside stop in the Middle Ages. The counts of Schweinfurt may have built the first fortification here, though written records are scarce. The place is worth visiting for the traces it holds of a vanished church and settlement. In 1556 the local people pulled down a small church that stood on the mound, obeying a command from the prince-elector to remove ‘unnecessary’ churches. Archaeologists later spotted the church’s foundations from the air and found traces of a surrounding wall. Finds of human bones and spurs suggest the site was used long before the church was built. Without clear written records, historians still debate whether this was ever a proper castle or simply the heart of a medieval village. Today the mound is an open field, quiet and easy to reach. Visitors can walk its edges and imagine the buildings that once stood there. The surrounding farmland stretches away gently, giving a sense of the old road and the settlements nearby. The site shows how ordinary places can hold layers of history beneath the surface.
